Just as important it is for us to take care of our physical health, taking the time to look after our mental health is equally important.

 

One in five people experience a mental illness, yet over half of those struggling don’t reach out for help due to the stigma attached.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day, a day for global awareness and advocacy about mental illness and the part we all need to play in creating a mentally healthy world.

This World Mental Health Day, the Luna Pole Wear team have made a pledge to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness by promising to reinforce the importance of our mental wellbeing at the office.

We’ve also put together a list of actions you can practice, or you can help a friend with.

Things you can do for yourself

  • Switch off: Put away your electronic devices half an hour before you plan on going to sleep.
  • Find Joy: Make time everyday to do something that brings you joy, whether it is painting, reading, having a long bath or putting on your favourite movie.
  • Detox: Even if it’s for a few hours everyday, take the time to sign out of your social media accounts and live in the present.
  • Breathe: Equip yourself with breathing exercises or why not take a yoga class to help you relax.
  • Be kind: Be kind to yourself. You’re stronger than you know.
  • Get active: go for a walk, join a team, enrol into pole dancing classes
  • Socialise: Organise to catch up with your friends
  • Gratitude: Take the time to write down three things you are grateful for each day or week.
  • Seek help: If you are struggling to cope with everyday life, seek help and visit your doctor.

 

Things you can do to support a friend

  • Talk: Starting a conversation and regularly check in with them
  • Socialise: Ask them to join you on a walk or an outing and encourage your friend circle to do the same.
  • Educate: Take the time to familiarise yourself with mental health and their signs and symptoms.
  • Listen: Listen to their feelings and thoughts and make an effort to use positive and supportive language.
  • Ask for help: If you feel overwhelmed or feel your friend needs more support, suggest they visit their doctor.
